Vancouver Public Library phases out its tape collection

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Changing technology and simple supply and demand have made it tough for the Vancouver Public library to maintain its collection of tape media. And now the library is opening up its vaults and putting piles of tapes up for sale.

Ross Bliss with the VPL says it’s getting tougher for the library to maintain and store the tapes and that’s why they’ve gotta go. “A large part of our collection is approaching sort of the last one or two years of its life, and it doesn’t make sense to continue buying what is essentially a dead format, especially when you consider the cost in many cases is much higher than a disc format.”

Tape lovers can take heart in the fact some of the more hard-to-find titles will be kept among the library’s special collections. The sale is on at the library’s main branch on Georgia Street until 6:00 p.m today. The tapes are 50 cents each or five for $2.
