Volunteers to mark BC Rivers Day

CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – B.C. is home to some of the most pristine rivers in the world, but some of them are getting increasingly clogged up with garbage.

Tomorrow, hundreds of volunteers will be rolling up their sleeves to help clean up Vedder River in Chilliwack as part of the annual B.C. Rivers Day — an annual event that gave rise to a global effort to preserve rivers.

Chris Gadsden is with Vedder River Cleanup Society. “It’s a celebration all across the world now, and it stemmed when Mark Angelo started the B.C. Rivers Day up on the Thompson River. It’s grown to all communities of British Columbia and as I say all across the world now.”

He says sixty tonnes of garbage have been removed from the river banks since 2002. “All the garbage that gets dumped by many users along the river bank, and problem is, a lot of that stuff gets washed down Vedder into the Fraser River, and then it ends up out in the ocean, and we sure don’t want that to happen.”

The cleanup kicks off at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow and will be followed by free BBQ and entertainment.
