Study: grunting may give tennis players a competitive edge

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Ever wonder what makes the top female tennis players in the world so good? It may have more to do with what comes out of their mouths, than what they do with their racquets.

A new research out of UBC says one of the reasons they might all be so successful is because of their grunting. Scott Sinnett did the research and says the grunts throw off a player’s opponent. “Could distract them, it could take away their attention from focusing on the ball being struck by the racquet.”

Sinnett is a tennis player too, so he says he is going to give it a try in his game. “I think I’m going to bring a ball horn with me and sound it off every time I hit the ball.”

He adds he is not quite sure how legal the ball horn is.
