Ontario Amber Alert program teams up with Facebook

TORONTO (NEWS1130) – Ontario’s Amber Alert program is teaming up with Facebook to widen its reach to find missing children.

A special Facebook page will broadcast Amber Alerts issued in the province, and users who subscribe to the page will receive alerts when a child has been abducted. Provincial police Commissioner Chris Lewis says when a child goes missing it’s critical to get information out to the public fast.

Ontario Liberal Michael Colle notes Facebook has more than 400 million active users worldwide, including more than seven million in Ontario.

Facebook Canada’s managing director Jordan Banks says it’s a viral means to spread the word when a child needs help. Banks also tells us Canada is the first country where the Amber Alert program is on the social networking site. New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island also have Amber Alert Facebook pages.
