VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s a packed weekend at the Vancouver International Film Festival. News1130 is here with the previews:

Mighty Jerome
Screens Sunday, October 10th at Vancity Theatre.

He was once the fastest man on the planet and now director and former professional hockey player Charles Officer, is bringing the movie about the life and legacy of Harry Jerome to the Vancouver International Film Festival.

He says many locals still have no idea the nine-foot bronze stature of the runner in Stanley Park, is dedicated to Jerome. “I didn’t know a lot about him. I think that I knew just something, and then once I actually got a hold of his book, and started to do some research, it was a dream project.”

Officer says there is one message in particular he wants people to get out of it. “I want people to take away the spirit of an individual who really defined what it means to persevere. When you look at your own life and you say you’ve done your best, and you look at this individual and then you can do the scale and check yourself a little bit and go at it.”

Winds of Heaven
Screens Sunday, October 10th, and Wednesday, October 13th, at Empire Granville Theatre.

The art of Emily Carr is forever part of BC heritage, but her life was full of hardship, disapproval and even scorn.

Filmmaker Michael Ostroff says his documentary about the enigmatic artist tries to avoid what he calls the Emily Carr ‘freak show.’ “What I wanted to do was present a living, breathing, tough, vulnerable, smart, confused, and ultimately a very sympathetic woman.”

He says her life journey was never easy. “She ran a boarding house, she knew how to fix the furnace and she knew how to do plumbing. And then she built this caravan and took it into the woods and lived in it for a month. Well, what kind of woman does that? The people of Victoria laughed at her on the street, they didn’t appreciate the art that she was doing.”

You can catch the world premiere of Ostroff’s movie tonight.
