Tories say no job losses if NB PotashCorp mine sold

By

MONCTON, NB-New Brunswick’s Minister of Natural Resources says
he’s been assured by BHP Billiton that jobs will be protected at the
province’s PotashCorp mine if it’s sold to the Australian mining giant.

The existing potash mine near Sussex employs 330 people full time, and about 130 new jobs will be created when a new mine opens in 2012.

Bruce Northrup says he’s also asking Federal Industry Minister, Tony Clement, to ensure that the jobs and mining royalties are protected if the deal is allowed to proceed.

Saskatchewan is working behind the scenes to block BHP Billiton’s $38.6-billion dollar US bid to acquire Saskatoon-based PotashCorp.

Their Premier, Brad Wall says the federal government should consider Australia’s own rules for reviewing foreign investment.

He says Australia has a system that reviews some deals differently than others.
