The original “Dano” of Hawaii Five-0 dies

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Actor James MacArthur, who played “Dano” in the original version of television’s “Hawaii Five-0” has died.

MacArthur was the son of actress Helen Hayes and playwright Charles MacArthur. He was 72 years old. It was not immediately known where he died, or the cause of death.

MacArthur played Detective Dan Williams for 11 years in “Hawaii Five-0,” tied to the show’s signature phrase “Book ’em, Dano.” The drama has been remade by CBS with a new cast this season.

MacArthur acted in several movies, including “Swiss Family Robinson” and “The Battle of the Bulge.”

His live acting career won him the 1961 Theatre World Award for best new actor for his performance in “Invitation to a March.”
