VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Carelessness is costing taxpayers a lot of money. According to the Province, a new federal public accounts report shows the government has lost millions of dollars.

The Department of National Defense is at the top of the list, reporting six million dollars in stolen, lost, or damaged goods. That includes telecommunications equipment and weapons.

Damage to RCMP vehicles costs $4.4 million, while $8,400 worth of Christmas decorations went missing from the Supreme Court of Canada. Petty theft seems to have made its way into government offices as well, as workers stole snowmobiles, petty cash, and solar panels.

The 17-page report blames the losses on damage, vandalism, and carelessness.
