Mounties Taser Surrey teen

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Surrey Mounties are defending their decision use a Taser to subdue a distraught 14-year-old boy Monday afternoon.

The child’s family called police to an apartment in the Guildford area after the teen apparently threatened to hit himself on the head with a mallet.

Constable Peter Neily says the Taser was fired once in push-stun mode only after all other use-of-force techniques failed.

“He is 5’10”, 180 pounds with a very muscular build.  So, to me that’s above average for a 14-year-old and that’s speaking from my experience.  Age at that point is not a concern; it’s the level of harm that the person is looking to cause themselves or anyone else.”

Neily adds the boy was taken to hospital under the Mental Health Act and is OK.
