Canadian Legion unhappy with peace groups distributing white poppies

OTTAWA – The Royal Canadian Legion is unhappy with peace groups in two provinces that are handing out white poppies ahead of Remembrance Day.

Peace groups are distributing the white poppies in Prince Edward Island and in Ottawa.

The groups say the white poppies are supposed to represent peaceful conflict resolution.

The legion calls the peace groups’ campaign an insult to veterans.

Legion spokesman Bob Butt also says the legion owns the trademark on the poppy so it may be a copyright issue.

The legion is threatening legal action if the groups don’t stop handing out the poppies.

Butt says it’s remembrance season, not peace season.

Brenda Vellino, with the Ottawa Poppy Coalition, says her group has been promoting the white poppy to as a way to remember civilians who have died in war.
