First Nations leader praises Campbell’s take on their cause

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The head of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs says he doesn’t hold out much hope Premier Gordon Campbell’s successor will keep pushing for First Nations land settlements.

Campbell held a referendum on settling First Nations land claims, but then advanced the new relationship, even brokering a deal with the Musqueam band. Few treaties have been signed since, and Grand Chief Stewart Phillip says Premier Gordon Campbell deserves praise, but not his government.

“He was not supported by his cabinet nor caucus in his efforts to move that agenda forward.  And as a result we’re still in the courts, the province is still advancing the same tired, old arguments.”

Phillip says because of that, they’re left with unresolved aboriginal land claims. First Nations leaders have also voiced concern after Campbell switched his Aboriginal Relations Minister.
