LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – Communities across the Lower Mainland mark Remembrance Day with ceremonies today.
VANCOUVER:
The Olympic cauldron will be relit at 8:20am.
Victory Square: The city’s largest Remembrance Day ceremony will take place at the cenotaph. Attendees are asked to gather at 10 am. The ceremony goes through to 11:30 am followed by a march past along Hastings Street.
C.R.A.B. Park at Portside: A twenty-one gun salute is set off adjacent to the park beginning at 11:02am. One round is fired every minute by members of the 15th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery.
Memorial South Park: A parade begins at John Oliver Secondary School at 10 am, followed by a memorial service at the cenotaph at 10:30 am.
Grandview Park: Due to park reconstruction, this service will take place at a temporary cenotaph at the outdoor plaza at Britannia Community Centre. Service begins at 10:30 am, parade begins at 11:15 am heading south on Commercial Drive.
Japanese Monument at Stanley Park: Attendees are asked to gather at 10:40 am. Sponsored by the Japanese Canadian War Memorial Society.
BURNABY:
Confederation Park Cenotaph: Ceremony begins at 10:45 am
Bonsor Park Cenotaph: Ceremony begins at 10:45.
NEW WESTMINSTER:
Royal Westminster Regiment Armoury: Participants are requested to assemble in the Armoury at 9:30 am for the Memorial Service which will begin at 10 am. Overflow seating will be provided at Queens Avenue United Church. There will be a parade to the Cenotaph at the front of City Hall. At the Cenotaph, the two minutes of silence will be observed at 11 am.
COQUITLAM:
Como Lake Middle School: Service begins at 10 am. A parade will go to the cenotaph on Porter Street where the laying of the wreaths will take place at 11 am.
RICHMOND:
Richmond City Hall: The cenotaph ceremony begins at 10:40 am with Mayor Malcolm Brodie among those placing official wreaths. A parade will then leave the cenotaph west on Granville Avenue. There will be minimal temporary traffic disruption along Granville Avenue and Minoru Boulevard during the post ceremony parade.
SURREY:
Cenotaph next to the Surrey Museum: Ceremony and family events including refreshments, chats with veterans, films, and “peaceful” crafts for children. 9:30 am – 12:30 pm.
ABBOTSFORD:
Thunderbird Memorial Square: Ceremony starts at 10:30 am.
MISSION:
Stave Lake St and 11th Ave: Parade starts at 10:20 am and goes to the Clarke Theatre. There, a ceremony will begin at 10:40 am. At about 11:30 am, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at Legion 57.
