“Container Village” contest semi-finalist

By

TRI-CITIES (NEWS1130) – The Tri-Cities area is a little closer to solving its homeless problem. The proposed “Container Village” is vying to win $500,000 to make the project a reality.

The Village would use modified shipping containers as shelter for the estimated 200 homeless people living in the area. Voters recently propelled the idea into the top 10 in an online contest by the Aviva Community Fund.

Organizer Gerry Sly explains, “The city is going to provide the land. Econo-Pro is providing the trailers, and the money we’re after is strictly operational money, we have to have staffing with the trailers.”

Sly came up with the idea after homeless people asked to use an abandoned container that was near his auto body shop. He’s been feeding them every Thursday over the last three years.

The next phase of voting begins in December.
