Emergency landing at YVR

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Flight 84 was initially delayed from taking off from Vancouver Airport because of a technical problem late Friday night.

John Lampl with British Airways says that had nothing to do with an engine surge that happened just after midnight when the plane was in the air, about half an hour from YVR.

That was when the captain of the Boeing 747 decided to head back.  Lampl says the surge was similar to a car backfiring. “Too much air gets in the engine for whatever reason, and the vibration got detected. The aircraft returned to Vancouver, but there was never any issue of safety or performance of the airplane.”

Emergency crews met the plane when it landed just after 2 a.m. Saturday.  The airline offered to put people up and expects them to be flown to London later in the day. There’s a British Airways flight scheduled to leave YVR for London at 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
