Canada to keep troops in Afghanistan until 2014

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS1130) – The federal government is confirming that it will keep up to 950 soldiers and support staff in Afghanistan on a training mission after Canada’s combat role ends next July.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon says the “non-combat” troops will be stationed in the Kabul area.  He says they’ll stay until 2014.

The government maintains the extension does not require formal parliamentary approval.  The precise makeup of the Canadian contingent will be decided after consultation with allies.

Cannon says Canada will also continue to provide humanitarian assistance.
