Canadian tourists return after blast in Mexico

CALGARY, AB. (NEWS1130) – Canadian tourists are making their way home from Playa del Carmen after Sunday’s explosion that left five people from our country dead.

A WestJet rescue plane bringing 50 survivors from Cancun to Calgary landed very early Tuesday, but no one on the flight was willing to speak to the media.

Some other passengers though, returned on other flights.  Chris Davis was one of those people and he’s still in shock.  “We were, that morning, on Sunday, remaining in bed.  And about 9 a.m. or 10 a.m., we heard what sounded like someone throwing their entire body weight against the door.  Looked outside, same experience we experienced as everyone else in our complex.  Obviously it was a great tragedy, many lives lost.”

Others like Aicee Hagel says many at the resort didn’t know what happened and carried on as normal.

“We were wondering how serious it was because everything was continuing as it was at other parts of the resort.  So, we didn’t think it was as serious.  Then we started to hear that a couple people got injured.  Then we heard about at least two deaths that happened.  From then on we didn’t hear anything, we actually heard more on the news on the airplane.”

A total of 400 WestJet travelers were at the Princess Riviera Hotel when the blast happened.  Some have chosen to continue their vacation at other resorts.
