Texting while driving top concern for drivers, CAA study finds

TORONTO, Ont. – A new survey by the Canadian Automobile Association found the biggest safety concern for drivers on the roads and highways is texting while driving.

According to the survey, 85 per cent of drivers feel texting on the road has become more of a safety concern than drinking and driving.

The reason: so many more people are texting while behind the wheel.

680News spoke to drivers at a gas station near Highway 400, and many shared a tale or two of an encounter they had with someone who was texting while behind the wheel.

One driver named Bruno, from Gravenhurst, Ont., said he had a close call a couple of days ago.

“This guy was looking down, looked up, the guy in front hit the brakes, he jammed the brakes on and cut across and cut me off, just because he wasn’t paying attention, I almost hit him,” he said.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford said while texting and driving is a concern, “my opinion is that drinking and driving are still the number one cause of fatalities and serious collisions on the highways.”

“Texting […] is up there, but I think drinking and driving is more serious,” he added.
