Pubs near transit hubs flourishing with new DUI laws

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Not all restaurant owners are complaining about BC’s tougher drinking and driving laws. Some pubs located near transit hubs are actually seeing a boost in business.

Eli Gershkovitch with Steamworks Brewing Company says location is everything right now.

“Normally in October, business starts to taper off a bit. The cruise ships leave Vancouver, tourism dies down, and people go back to school and work. But this October, we’ve seen a significant ramp up… and the only thing that is different is the new drinking and driving regulations that have come in.”

He figures the boost is from the fact that the pub is right at the Waterfront Station. “You have the convergence of SkyTrain, SeaBus, Canada Line, West Coast Express.”

While Gershkovitch says the laws are an obvious benefit to his business right now, he does feel for other establishments that are struggling.
