Whitecaps have their first MLS player

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps have begun building their roster for March’s Major League Soccer launch. Today the club introduced American defender Jay DeMerit as their first official signing.

The 30-year-old US international has played professionally for nearly a decade and started in all four of the US World Cup matches in South Africa this year. The Green Bay, Wisconsin native also captained English side Watford for three seasons. Whitecaps coach Teitur Thordarson says DeMerit’s leadership qualities could serve him well as captain of the Whitecaps in their Major League Soccer debut.

DeMerit’s coach at Watford was Ray Lewington who was a starting midfielder for the old NASL Vancouver Whitecaps team that captured the 1979 Soccer Bowl.
