No details of RCMP audit until new contract negotiated

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – An audit’s been done on the RCMP’s performance over the last 20 years, but the province won’t say why, or what’s in the report. That’s not sitting well with the BC Civil Liberties Association.

Association president Robert Holmes says they almost found out by accident that an audit was even being done. “That then led us to make inquiries. The result of the inquires from the government and the RCMP were such as to indicate to us that there’s an audit.”

Holmes believes there could billions of dollars going into a that contract for 2012. “We want to know the best decision is being made; Not just as to whether to continue with the RCMP, but also on what terms.”

Solicitor General Rich Coleman says the information will only be released when the negotiations are done, and there is nothing unusual about it.

But Holmes says the public deserves to know “whether or not the public is going to get value for money, and a sense of confidence that the RCMP and provincial officials are doing their job.”
