Baby boomers becoming a source of anger for younger people

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There is growing resentment among many young people over the way their tax dollars are being spent, and those feelings are increasingly directed toward baby boomers.

Jonathon Gatehouse, the author of “What The Boomers Are Leaving Their Children,” calls the younger crowd the ‘screwed’ generation, saying they’re angry because politicians have been promising to fix things for them. “As they’ve brought in cuts, they protected all of these programs for pensioners and for people that are soon to be retired, really rich benefits, like fuel subsidies and free transit passes and all of the like. And now they’re tripling University tuition.”

He says the anger is being stirred up as governments adjust their books, post-recession. “You know they are starting to cut back, and what the young people are objecting to is that they are bearing the brunt of the cuts, rather than the bigger, older generation that’s come ahead of them.”

“What The Boomers Are Leaving Their Children” will be published in the December 6th edition of Macleans magazine.
