A hundred million new tweeters

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Twitter is celebrating a big milestone, claiming 100 million new users so far in 2010. At the end of 2009, Twitter’s growth had flat-lined, but then it exploded, as it became a popular platform for instant news and information.

The growth of @News1130radio on Twitter this year certainly echoes that. From real-time news and information to comedy and plain old curiosity, people have glommed onto the micro-blog format. But there are certainly still resisters on the streets of Metro Vancouver.

“I have an account, but I don’t think I’ve ever used it. I don’t really use Facebook much either. There’s just no point in it really,” says one woman.

We met a man who says, “It’s that old thing … I wouldn’t want to belong to a club that has me as a member. I wouldn’t want to lead anybody that would actually follow me.”

The biggest spike in growth on Twitter has been with mobile users.
