BC comes out on top for breast and ovarian cancer survival

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC is getting top marks for cancer survival rates in a big study. The research compared breast, colorectal, lung and ovarian cancer survival rates among regions in Canada, Australia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the UK.

The study, published in the British medical journal The Lancet, says BC has the best survival rates for breast and ovarian cancer.

Dr. David Levy with the BC Cancer Agency explains why this province has become so successful at cancer treatment.

“(It’s the collaboration) between researchers in the laboratories and the clinicians, which brings the laboratories and the new discoveries to the patient’s bedside. When we make new discoveries and new drugs are found throughout the whole world, we use them as soon as possible in BC.”

He points our survival rates for lung and colorectal cancer are also improving.
