VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A hundred people were evacuated from their apartment building after a deadly fire in Esquimalt that claimed the life of one man on Christmas Eve.

But assistant chief George McGregor with Esquimalt Fire says half of the tenants are now back in their homes. “There is going to be some renovations done to the building in regards to replacing some of the drywall and carpeting, so some of the people will be actually displaced for a couple of days yet to come.”

For the time being, Emergency Social Services is putting them up in local hotels.

A man in his sixties died in the fire that started in his apartment at 1325 Esquimalt Road on Friday.
