World champs head to Burnaby Velodrome this week

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Olympians and world champions are descending on an indoor race track in Burnaby for three days of intense bike racing.  And the Saputo 4 is bringing in some big names, like Zach Bell from North Vancouver.

The Beijing Olympian and world champion will be zipping around the wood-ovaled, 200-metre Burnaby Velodrome competing for $10,000 in prizes.

Riders will race in the Omnium, a decathlon of sorts that includes sprint and endurance races.  And it’s open to you to watch for $5.

While it may look simple, keep in mind the riders are flying on a nearly 50 degree angle at up to 60 kilometres an hour on fixed gear bikes sans brakes.

If you’re interested in learning how to do it, the Velodrome has a Learn to Ride Program and there are etiquette rules to avoid those crashes.
