Canada heads to the semis with a 4-1 win over the Swiss

BUFFALO, NY (NEWS 1130) – Casey Cizikas’ goal late in the second period gave Canada a 2-1 lead and proved to be the winner, as Canada added two more in the third to beat Switzerland 4-1 today at the IIHF U20 World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo, New York.

Canada fell behind early when Switzerland’s Inti Pestoni opened the scoring, beating Canada goalie Mark Visentin just over a minute into the first period. Canada would settle down their play and tie up the game when Port Moody’s Ryan Johansen found the back of the net at the 15:06 mark to tie the game at 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.

In the second, it was all Canada as they piled on the shots, peppering Swiss goalie Benjamin Conz with 11 shots in the frame. Conz made all but one save in the period with Casey Cizikas’ goal being the lone goal of the period.

In the third, it was more of the same from Canada. Luis Leblanc scored just over four minutes into the period while teammate Zach Kassian added an empty netter to ice the game for Canada.

They’ll now face the United States in the semifinal on Monday night in a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s gold medal game.
