RCMP looking for shackled escapee

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Burnaby RCMP are looking for a woman arrested for shoplifting who pulled a Houdini style trick Friday night.

The woman was arrested at Metrotown Mall and after some kind of medical issue she was taken to Burnaby General Hospital.

Staff at the hospital asked the RCMP officer to remove the woman’s handcuffs so that she could use the washroom, and a portable toilet was wheeled into the cubicle.

The officer guarding the woman removed one handcuff but left the woman in shackles.  When she didn’t respond, the officer checked and found that she had escaped.

Inspector David Fleugel with Burnaby RCMP says they’re looking into how this happened.  “There will be a complete and thorough review of the handling of this prisoner by the Burnaby RCMP as a result of this unacceptable incident.”

Police say 46-year-old Susan Smith was last seen wearing a pair of hospital scrubs, no shoes, with a white sheet or blanket wrapped around her. She was still wearing shackles and one handcuff on her left wrist.  She is about 5’3″, 160 pounds, with a thin build, thinning brown hair and blue eyes.

Anyone who sees her is asked to call police.
