Police presence around local Coptic churches

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Mounties are keeping an eye on two Surrey churches, where Coptic Christians continue Christmas celebrations this weekend.  It follows a deadly terrorist attack in Egypt on New Year’s Day.

The two churches, St. Mary and St. George, serve Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

Surrey RCMP Inspector Dave Attfield says they’ll be providing families assurance, even though the likelihood of a local attack is remote.  “There are at certain times where police presence provides some assurance.  The Orthodox Christmas, that’s an important event and a lot of people in the community want to go to the churches.  And that’s the other side of the coin here.”

Churches in Montreal and Toronto have scaled back on some of their weekend festivities in memory of the lives lost during last week’s attack.  A bomb killed 21 worshippers and injured nearly 100 people.
