We’re likely to change shopping habits due to ethical issues

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – People in this province are most likely to change their shopping habits based on ethical issues according to new numbers from Statistics Canada.

Will buying environmentally friendly laundry detergent really make a difference to the world?  Maybe not, but Ben West with the Western Canada Wilderness Committee says sometimes it can send a strong message.

“If you vote with your dollars, ultimately the more dollars you’ve got, the more power you’ve got.  Which means you or I only have a certain amount of ability to make change, whereas anybody with more access to cash has a lot more power.”

He adds it can be a useful way to draw attention to an issue.  “But ultimately, we think that’s why we have government, to regulate, to legislate, and to actually put rules in place to make long term changes possible.”

Stephanie Goodwin with Greenpeace says often times protests and boycotts can make a difference, especially when it comes to policy.  “We’ve been able to see that in all sorts of different measures with everything from farmed salmon to logging practices, to the way seafood is sold in grocery stores.”
