Conditions treacherous for snowshoers

NORTH SHORE (NEWS1130) – Conditions in the backcountry are still hazardous, especially for snowshoers.

Tim Jones with North Shore Rescue says the risk of climbers slipping and falling is even greater than the avalanche danger. He stresses snowshoes are fine for climbing but not for trekking across the snow pack, which is especially icy.

“I really want to make sure people understand what they’re getting into. The use of snowshoes for this specific type of terrain is not a safe thing,” he explains.

A 50-year old woman had to be rescued from Cypress Mountain Sunday after she fell 10 metres during a snowshoeing trip. Jones says if she hadn’t hit a tree well, she would have gone over a cliff and could have died.
