Shining the light on CFLs

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s been a month since BC started phasing out incandescent light bulbs and the debate is still going strong.  But are compact fluorescent lights really worth the heftier price tag?

They cost more than incandescent bulbs, you shouldn’t throw them away and they contain small amounts of mercury.

Only five per cent of people actually disposed of them correctly according to a US study.  So, are they really the greener choice?

Environmentalists say CFLs use less power and last longer.  But some say the government shouldn’t phase out the old ones and we should be able to make our own choices.
