No tickets for Vancouver’s non-smoking bylaw yet

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You haven’t been able to smoke in parks or on beaches in Vancouver for five months, but are people getting the message?

Hundreds of people have been caught lighting up, but not a single ticket has been handed out.

“This was never a cash grab, it was about public health and a better environment,” says Aaron Jasper with the Vancouver Park Board.

He says they’ve talked to almost 1,000 people. “It’s an old habit, right? People are used to going for a walk, maybe down to the beach, they forgot about the new bylaw. But the response has been very positive. They’re like, ‘we’re sorry’ and they butt out right away and understand the bylaw and we’ve had no problems.”

Jasper says they are also trying to improve signage before the nicer weather hits to remind people they can’t light up. He warns repeat offenders shouldn’t expect to get off scot-free.
