Preventing the culling of sled dogs in the future

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Hopefully some good can come out of the slaughter of 100 sled dogs in Whistler.  The operator of Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours says strict standards should be in place nation-wide.

The Alberta company has mentored other people who have started similar businesses for years.

Snowy Owl’s Connie Arsenault says the problem is some outfitters have varying levels of ethics and standards and may actually be passing along the wrong information.  “Here the vicious circle goes.  An operator might say ‘Oh, it’s OK to cull dogs.’  The next operator may cull dogs then.”

She adds the man linked to the mass slaughter in Whistler applied to work at her company, but she didn’t hire him.  Arsenault explains he didn’t have enough experience in the field.

Arsenault has also created a website with an application form to launch a coalition to help stop something like this from happening again.
