Super Bowl XLV preview

By

ARLINGTON, TX (NEWS1130) – Super Bowl XLV featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers versus the Green Bay Packers is one of the most anticipated match-ups in NFL history.  Two of the most storied franchises are meeting for the first time in the Super Bowl.

In baseball, this is the New York Yankees versus the Boston Red Sox. Basketball, it’s the Los Angeles Lakers versus the Boston Celtics.  In hockey, it’s the Montreal Canadians versus the Toronto Maple Leafs, well, maybe not so much with the latter of the two.  The difference is all these legendary teams have met numerous times in a championship affair.  But for the Steelers and Packers this is just the beginning of what could be another classic rivalry.

The Steelers hold six Vince Lombardi Trophies, the most out of anyone in the NFL.  While the Packers own three.  However, the Packers did take six NFL championship games in the days before the Super Bowl existed.  Pittsburgh is on the hunt for its third championship in six years, while the Packers are looking to win their first since Brett Favre led them to the title back in 1997.

Both teams feature two premier quarterbacks that are household names.  Recently Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger has been in the spotlight over accusations of a sexual assault, which tarnished his image.  He has won the big game twice before and is searching for his third ring in just seven seasons.  Another Super Bowl win for Roethlisberger will put him in the same company as Troy Aikman and Tom Brady.

Green Bay’s quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be looking to climb out of the shadow of former Packer legendary quarterback Favre.  Ever since Rodgers took over Favre’s vacated position as the Packers starting pivot, he has slowly made the Wisconsin faithful forget about their former golden child.

Rodgers has emerged over the last three seasons as one of the NFL’s most elite quarterbacks and a win Sunday would inch him that much closer to filling Favre’s shoes in Green Bay.

With the weather in the Arlington area calling for highs of four degrees, one thing that’s for certain is that the Steelers and Packers will be feeling right at home in the cold.
