Davey Butorac sentenced

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – There is relief for the families of two women brutally murdered in the Fraser Valley several years ago. The man convicted of their killings has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 23 years.

The judge said Davey Butorac showed no remorse and killed the two women for no apparent reason.

Earlier today, the court heard some heart-wrenching testimony.

“You took away my confidant, my teacher, my everything.” Those were the words from the mother of Gwendolyn Jo Lawton in a victim impact statement to Butorac.

The Crown also read a victim impact statement from Koroll’s father, saying she was his little girl, and daddy was not there to protect her.

Butorac was convicted of murdering both Lawton and Sheryl Koroll after their exposed bodies were found in Abbotsford and Langley four months apart in 2007. Both women worked in the sex trade to pay for their drug addiction.

The Crown wanted Butorac to serve 25 years in prison before he can apply for parole, which is the maximum, calling Butorac amongst the worst group of offenders and these amongst the worst group of offenses. The defence asked for between 20 and 22 years before parole.

The Crown compared Butorac to Robert Pickton in that he preyed on and murdered vulnerable women.
