Grammy performances rocked; award upsets

By

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – If there was ever a Grammy Awards show that was filled with upsets, this was it.

  • Music reporter Rudy Blair attended the show, held at the Staples Centre, on Sunday, and shared his thoughts in a live blog.

Everyone who was sitting in my section at the Staples Centre was blown away several times, when certain winners were announced.

One of shockers was in the ‘best new artist’ category. Some thought it would either go to Justin Bieber, Drake or Mumford & Sons, but it went to relatively unknown jazz artist Esperanza Spalding.

What made the show so exciting were the performances. The tribute to Aretha Franklin, done by Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson, set the pace for the rest of the night. There were also brilliant performances from Bruno Mars, B.o.B., Bob Dylan, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Drake and Eminem.

But, Cee-Lo Green, who sang “Forget You” with the Muppets and Gwenyth Paltrow, had the best performance, garnering a standing ovation.

Another thrilling moment was to hear Barbra Streisand sing, and to hear her sing live was an incredible experience. And another thrilling moment was to see Mick Jagger take to the stage. Who would have thought this was his first time at the Grammys?

If there’s anything that makes the Grammys exciting is how unpredictable it can be.
