Exclusive: Harper speaks out about Egyptian crisis

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – Prime Minister Stephen Harper is opening up about the crisis in Egypt.  There has been a lot of criticism the Conservative government has been too quiet on the topic, but in an exclusive interview with News1130‘s Parliament Hill reporter Cormac McSweeney, Harper discussed former President Hosni Mubarak and Canada’s role moving forward.

“Everybody is very excited about the transition that’s happened so far,” says Harper.  He’s cautiously optimistic as Egypt takes major steps towards democracy.

Harper says Canada will work with its allies to assist the country in any way and it’s important Egyptians move quickly and safely away from Mubarak’s dictatorship.

“That, I think, is now widely recognized to be in office way too long and not to have been moving the country in the right direction towards freedom of democracy and justice.  That said we don’t actually know what we’re moving towards.”

He points out the federal government has to work alongside the Egyptian people and authorities on this because we can’t impose ourselves on another sovereign country.
