New inspection fee proposed for Canadians entering US

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It could soon cost a bit more to fly to the States. A proposed $5.50 inspection fee for Canadians entering the US is in President Barak Obama’s draft budget.

The cash collected would go toward funding ever-more invasive air passenger inspections. At the US departures area at YVR this morning, most Canadians we talked to feel they’re already being charged too many “extras” on their airline tickets.

“I don’t do a lot of traveling, but I feel like we’re just about ‘fee-ed out’ about now,” says one woman. “We’re paying way too many taxes.”

“I think it’s a bit ridiculous, especially with what [the US is] going through, trying to get out of the recession,” says another woman. “Tourism is such a big aspect of potential income for them.”

The fee already applies to citizens of many other countries but Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries have been exempt.
