Analysts checking if border truck lane is underused

By

BELLINGHAM (NEWS1130) – There are suggestions the truck lane on the US side of the Blaine border crossing is not being adequately used.  Researchers at Western Washington University are now looking to see if the lane should be re-configured to keep traffic flowing.

David Davidson, who is leading the study, says one option is to make that lane just like the others.

“If you have congestion on the highway and if you have trucks backed up quite a distance, and there is this lane that is quite underutilized… why not?”

A crew of eight will monitor how much time it takes for trucks and others to get through the crossing.  The findings will be sent to US Customs and Border Services.

The research will also see whether taking the fast trucks off that lane will help.  “Move them over to the general purpose truck lanes so that one lane now would be supporting just the bus and Nexus cards… that frees up the extra pavement.”
