Shelters prepare for wicked winter blast

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Local shelters are getting ready for what could be the deepest freeze of the season coming this week.  Temperatures could dip as low as -10 degrees by Friday, and when you factor in the wind chill it will feel like -20 degrees.

James Pratt, with the Greater Vancouver Shelter Strategies Extreme Weather Response, expects numbers to hit a seasonal high.  “We have an additional 675 spaces that can be opened up across the region as needed.  So far this winter, we’ve only had to use about half of those for most of the alerts and additional spaces are opened as required.”

Pratt adds the bone-chilling blast of Arctic air may be enough to get even the most hardcore homeless people off the street to seek shelter.
