Donate to keep those in need warm as temperatures drop

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As the mercury drops, the City of Vancouver is asking people to donate warm clothes and blankets to help those in need.

Temperatures are forecast to drop to minus eight overnight and stay below freezing this weekend.

The city’s temporary shelters are full and the extreme weather shelters have opened their doors.

Councillor Kerry Jang says city workers are out on the street, handing out winter clothes and blankets. “We make sure that the homeless folks have enough sweaters and socks and somewhere they can stay. I mean, quite often some of them don’t want to go inside, so if they want to stay outside, we try to find them some place of safety and refuge outside, and to make sure that they do have something that will break the wind, or keep them from getting too cold.”

The items most needed are socks, sweaters, jackets, gloves, scarves and toques. Donations can be drooped off at the Gathering Place at 609 Helmcken Street, or in a bin located in the lobby at city hall.
