Abbott: Weighted vote not a guarantee for me

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – George Abbott‘s supporters, like those of all of today’s BC Liberal leadership candidates, are working the phones, urging members to cast a ballot today.  Those supporters include Abbotsford MLA John van Dongen and Energy Minister Steve Thomson.

Abbott says he’s feeling calm and happy his 110 days on the campaign trail is coming to an end. He’s considered one of the front-runners in today’s vote, and is confident he will be named BC’s next premier.

The Shuswap MLA says the party’s weighted system won’t necessarily make him a shoo-in for the job, but he admits it could be a plus for his campaign.  “It gives greater weight, to the smaller and generally rural ridings in the province.”

“But the fact of the matter is that there are some pretty small ridings in urban centres as well,” he adds. “So that can work both ways, and can work for any of the candidates.”

Abbott explains he’s got his eye on a second-round win.  “All of the indications we’ve had are that we should hopefully be in second place [to start out], and then move up into first as the balloting proceeds.”
