Man shot and killed by Surrey RCMP

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Police are investigating after officers shot and killed a man in Surrey late last night, but say they can’t confirm if the suspect fired back.

Mounties pulled the man in his Chrysler 300 over and noticed a gun. The driver took off and crashed into an awaiting police cruiser at King George Boulevard and Highway 10.

“‘Hands up, get your hands up. Get on the ground, you won’t get hurt if you put your hands up. Passenger side, do this, driver side, do this,'” Lisa, a witness, tells us she heard.

That’s when gunshots rang out. People in the area tell us they heard at least eight shots. Police believe the suspect was armed with a handgun and an assault rifle. He died at the scene.

Sergeant Dean Jantzen says they can’t confirm if the man fired any shots at the officer who confronted him.  “I know that there’s been some information out there that there may have been an exchange of gunfire. I can’t confirm that because our investigators have not confirmed that yet.”

Janson says Saanich investigators are still working on confirming other details too, including whether there was a police chase.

All this happened just a couple of blocks from Surrey RCMP headquarters. Saanich Police are now in charge of the investigation.
