Advocates shocked by child care violations in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS1130) – They say you have to do your homework before putting your child into daycare.  That’s the lesson to be learned after word a Surrey facility was caring for 17 kids over the legal limit.

Katherine MacIntyre with the BC Family Child Care Association says she was shocked to hear 24 kids were being cared for at the Grandview Heights facility.  “This is extreme and outside of the norm.”

She tells News1130 parents need to inspect facilities before enrolling their children.  “Interview the child care provider.  Find out if it’s licensed or a license is not required, and what terms they operate under, and understanding those terms.”

Some daycares don’t need to be licensed, but MacIntyre notes, “The environment hasn’t been scrutinized by [a health authority]… you just have to be that much more diligent.”

She also suggests following up with unexpected visits.  “If you walk in at 2 p.m., then you should be welcomed as if you walked in at 5 p.m. every single day.”

The Vancouver Sun reports the daycare could have brought in about $275,000 per year, that’s four times what it should have been.  The facility has since been shut down.
