SURREY (NEWS1130) – The City of Surrey figures its crews collect about 100 rogue mattresses a month since a new disposal fee kicked in at the landfill January 1st.
Dumping your old mattress at the landfill now sets you back $20; that’s clearly too much for some people, who say they’ve noticed a lot of dumping on the side of the road.
“When I’ve been out for a drive where there have developments, I’ve noticed quite a bit of dumping on the side of the streets,” says one man. “A lot of the things are construction material and furniture.”
Illegal dumping is a growing problem in Delta and Richmond, too. Surrey’s GM of Engineering tells the Vancouver Sun the solution may lie in charging a fee at the point of sale instead of at disposal.
