Canadians respond to Japan tragedy

The Canadian Red Cross said they have raised $1.4-million in online donations since Friday, to help the people of Japan.

Facebook and Twitter are getting the credit with people sharing pictures and video of the disaster

Tanya Elliott with the Canadian Red Cross told 680News what an incredible response they are receiving.

“We know, that in time of disaster, whether if it’s in Canada or around the world, Canadians are known for stepping up,” said Elliott.

“They do time and time again to help those who are in need.”

Rogers, the parent company of 680News is helping the Red Cross raise money. You can donate online or text ASIA to 30333 to make a one-time $5 donation.

 “The best way for Canadians to help the people affected in Japan is through a financial donation,” said Elliot.

World Vision Canada is also accepting donations to help with relief efforts in Japan.

“In a situation like this, children are especially vulnerable to, obviously, things like lack of food and water but also it’s the emotion things,” Dave Toycen from World Vision Canada told 680News.

A raft of celebrities has sent their condolences to those who have lost family members in the disaster.

Lady Gaga is urging her fans to buy a special bracelet launched to raise funds for those affected by the Japanese tsunami.

Now the pop star is asking fans to donate $5 or more to the relief effort by purchasing a, “We Pray for Japan” bracelet on her website.
