Canadian donations for Japan top $10 million so far

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canadians wanting to help out the victims in Japan have been digging deep into their pockets to donate to charities.

So far, about $9 million has been given to the Red Cross. Another $2 million has gone to charities like World Vision Canada, Save the Children, and Oxfam.

Bas Brusche with the Red Cross says despite Japan being a wealthy nation, Canadians have still been  quite generous. “From the very start, donations from Canadians have been pouring in… That is very substantial.”

“Moreover, we know that every day, community fund raising events are taking place and new donations are being announced,” he says. “So, it’s going really well and we really appreciate the support we are getting for Japan.”

Brusche emphasizes the need for ongoing support. “The scale of the devastation is so enormous, financial support to our Japanese friends will be needed for the next months and perhaps years to come.

He tells us there’s currently one Canadian Red Cross worker on the ground in Japan assessing the situation. Japan hasn’t asked for any more help because they already have two million volunteers working for the organization.
