Most people in BC are in police database

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It was introduced as a better way to track serial killers, sex offenders and other criminals, but there is a good chance your name is in the PRIME-BC police database.

Up to 85 per cent of British Columbians are in the database and if you’ve ever had any interaction with police, even if you just made a call about a noisy neighbour, you are in the system.

Speaking live on News1130 David Eby with the BC Civil Liberties Association says you have no control over what information goes in.

“Say you call 911 and police come and say, ‘Well actually we want to have a look inside your house,’ and you say no… if the police officer says the witness was non-cooperative, you might get a check mark that says you had negative police contact.”

Eby adds that negative police contact can prevent you from getting a job or volunteer opportunity that requires criminal record checks.

You can file a Freedom of Information request to see if you’re on the list and to see what’s been said about you.
