Tories choose immigrant candidate for East Vancouver riding

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Conservatives are betting on a refugee from Vietnam to help them win Vancouver-Kingsway.
The Tories were trounced in the riding after a high-profile defection years ago when David Emerson, who won as a Liberal in 2006, jumped to the Conservative cabinet of Stephen Harper. The NDP won the riding in 2008.
Now, Trang Nguyen is carrying the Tory banner. She came to Canada with her family from Vietnam as a refugee years ago.
“The economy is very important,” she says. “We do need jobs in this riding, and I believe that’s the main focus that we should look for.”
Nguyen was joined by Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, who has come down hard on illegal immigration.
