Move over for emergency vehicles, it’s the law

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Police may have handed out warnings in the past, but they’re now getting tough on drivers who refuse to slow down or move over for emergency vehicles.

It may be because people aren’t totally clear about the law, which has been in effect for almost two years now, says RCMP Constable Kate Mooney.

“I had several people say to me ‘Oh, I thought that was just for ambulances,'” she explains. “A few people said they did know and just didn’t do it. Then there were a few people who said they didn’t even know. It [is their] responsibility to know the laws, and we did do a lot of media coverage about it.”

A recent blitz in Nanaimo ended with 22 drivers getting $173 tickets for not moving over or slowing down for a tow truck with its lights on.

For folks accusing Mounties of entrapment, “It’s just like when we set up for people talking on their cell phones, or not wearing their seatbelts or speeding,” says Mooney.
